Age: 31 Classification: Graduate Student Major: Masters in Mass Communication [Broadcast Journalism] Background: Graduated from UNM in 1995 with a double major in Mass Communications and Spanish. During my undergraduate years I participated in two study abroad programs in which I had the pleasure to live and study in Mexico and Spain. This kicked off an intense desire to continue traveling after I graduated, so I continued traveling. I worked as an English instructor in Japan for 18 months, followed up by backpacking, ending up working briefly in Holland. I returned to Santa Fe, where I worked during the winter season at the ski basin. After that, I hit the road once again and headed down south, landing in the heart of South America, Paraguay. I taught English at a private institute and bacpacked around the southern cone. After the money ran out, I returned to New Mexico and Albuquerque, where I worked at the alternative newspaper The Weekly Alibi, selling advertising and promotions. It was very fun, and an interesting environment, to say the least. The travel bug kicked in again and once again I went down to Costa Rica, where I did a professional internship with a monthly publication dedicated to the preservation of human rights in Central America. After completing that, I went down to Panama and on to Colombia. After the money ran out once again and everything got stolen, I returned to New Mexico, where I eventually decided to return to school to pursue a masters degree with which I could engage in a "meaningful" career in which I would be able to dedicate my time and effort to a human rights-related field.
