Weekly Activities at the Student Center

At the Student Center, we try to have an average of four meetings a week. I say “an average” because there are many times when we all just want to get together and do something that is not exactly a regular scheduled activity, referred to below as the “spontaneous combustion” (no, not a cult thing). Our usual weekly schedule goes like this:

  • Monday Night Meal
  • Wednesday Night Class
  • Friday Night Devotional
  • Sunday Night Meals
  • Spontaneous Combustions

Monday Night Meal
Every Monday night we have a supper prepared by whatever student or person volunteers for it that week. Many times we might play volleyball or go to the fellowship room to do our own things afterwards. Basically, Monday night gives everyone a chance to reorganize themselves after those “Monday Blues.”

Wednesday Night Class
Most of the members of the Student Center choose to attend 3rd & Kilgore Church of Christ in Portales as they are the main providers for the Student Center.  After assembling for a brief devotional, the church dispatches into classes.  The college are group has class in a separate area and our studies are geared towards the issues college students face or question.

Friday Night Devotional
Friday Night is our most important night of the week because it is the end of a long, tedious week of college.  It is the Student Center’s way of entering the weekend and distancing ourselves from the world.  Many other students and groups will choose to use Friday nights for “fun” by abusive aspects.  Friday nights at the Student Center are based on spiritual growth and fellowship with brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus.  We praise God and have a discussion oriented devotional to enlighten our minds.  Then tension is released by the activities of choice (basketball, volleyball, pool, TV, etc.)

Some Fridays, we have a different approach to our devotional or Rick finds some other weird game for us to experience (I’ll never forget that night I had my foot in a bowl of ice searching for marbles!).  Regardless of what we do, we have the best time doing it.  And best of all, we know that it God-blessed fun.

Sunday Night
Sunday night we usually gather at the Student Center after the evening services at 3rd & Kilgore Church of Christ.  Food is prepared by volunteers from the church and the night is ours to do as we like.

Spontaneous Combustion
Another weekly activity is on I like to refer to as “Spontaneous Combustion.”  This is where someone, somewhere thinks we should go do something and they call our designated group callers to notify everyone else.  Sometimes, this means a movie, other times it means bowling in Clovis.  It is always a refreshing and spontaneous thing to do.
